The night before I jumped: my skydiving checklist

Why a night‑before plan matters

When I finally saw the countdown on my reservation page, the excitement turned into a kind of nervous energy. Knowing exactly what to do before the plane doors open takes that buzz and turns it into confidence. A simple list can keep the day from feeling chaotic and let the real thrill shine through.

Three things I never skip

1. Double‑check your gear and paperwork

Even if the drop‑zone staff will inspect everything, I like to run a quick inventory at home. Pull out the jumpsuit, helmet, and goggles, lay them out, and make sure nothing is missing or damaged. Then I print the waiver and any medical forms, sign them, and stash them in my backpack. At the time of writing, most centers still require a hard copy, so having it ready saves a last‑minute scramble.

2. Eat smart, hydrate smart

It’s tempting to go all‑out with a big steak the night before, but I stick to a light protein‑rich dinner and a good glass of water. Heavy meals can make the stomach feel uneasy during the ascent, and dehydration can dull focus when you’re strapped into the plane. I also pack a small snack—like a banana or a handful of nuts—to keep my energy steady before the jump.

3. Visualise the jump and set a simple mantra

Before I drift off, I close my eyes and picture the whole sequence: the door opening, the rush of wind, the moment I pull the cord. I repeat a short phrase—“steady, smooth, enjoy”—to keep my mind anchored. This mental rehearsal cuts down the jittery thoughts that often creep in when the countdown hits zero.

Bonus tip: Arrive early and meet the crew

Getting to the drop‑zone at least thirty minutes before your slot lets you chat with the instructors, ask any lingering questions, and get a feel for the aircraft. Those few minutes of casual conversation often turn strangers into allies, and a friendly face can calm nerves just as effectively as any checklist item.

Wrapping up the night

When the last item on my list is ticked off, I feel a quiet confidence settle in. The countdown on the reservation page no longer feels like a pressure gauge—it’s just a reminder that the adventure is about to begin. With gear ready, stomach settled, and mind focused, the jump itself becomes the pure, exhilarating experience I signed up for.
